What happens in the first hour after a tree fails?

Triage, then make-safe, then documentation, then cutting. A failed tree is a loaded structure. A stem lying across a driveway is in bind: the compression side is on the underside where the ground supports it and the tension side is on top, or the reverse where the trunk is bridging a gap. Cutting the wrong side first pinches the bar or rolls the trunk.

Triage on arrival

1. Confirm no conductor is involved; if one is, the utility comes first and nobody approaches.
2. Walk the debris field and mark every hanger and spring pole from a safe distance.
3. Establish the load path of the failed stem and identify the compression and tension sides.
4. Photograph the damage, the failure point and the root plate before anything is moved.
5. Make safe: tarping over an opened roof, and cordoning the work area.
6. Clear, in the order that keeps the remaining structure stable.

How much does an emergency call-out cost?

Why do trees fail in a Sonoma County storm?

Cabling and bracing before the next storm

Where a codominant union is sound enough to keep, cabling supports it. Static cabling uses a steel cable that holds a fixed distance. Dynamic cabling uses a synthetic rope that allows some movement and lets the union keep building reaction wood. Bracing is a threaded rod through the union itself, for splits that are already open.

• Bracing: a rod through an existing split, usually paired with a cable above it.

What about power lines and the service drop?

A secondary conductor carries less voltage than a primary and is no safer to touch. Where a tree is across either, the call goes to the utility first and the crew works behind them.

Limits the crew works to

• Approach any conductor, energised or assumed dead, without utility confirmation.
• Climb a stem that has been fire-damaged or is holding an unresolved bind.
• Cut a spring pole from the inside of its arc.
• Start clearing before the incident documentation is captured.
• Cut a stem still in storm bind before the bind has been relieved from the safe side.

A callout that taught us to photograph first
