What does tree removal actually involve?

Either a felling cut at the base, or top-down dismantling where nothing may be dropped. All Tree Service uses the second method on most Santa Rosa lots: a climber works down the spar pole, and each section is lowered on a rigging line through a friction device rather than allowed to fall.

Rigging, lowering and the equipment involved

• A lowering line rated well above the section weight, run through a redirect block where the arc would otherwise swing into a target.
• A friction device — usually a porta-wrap — at the base, so a groundworker can let a section run and then stop it.
• A brush chipper fed continuously, with the chip truck positioned to keep the drop zone clear.
• A felling cut with a face notch, back cut and measured hinge wood, on the rare lots with room for one.

How much does tree removal cost in Santa Rosa?

When is removal the right answer rather than pruning?

What is a decay column and why does it decide the outcome?

A decay column is a hollow of degraded wood running up the stem behind apparently sound bark. A tree walls decay off rather than healing it, so the column only grows. Once it passes roughly a third of the stem radius, All Tree Service treats the Santa Rosa tree as a removal.

A removal that taught us to set a second rigging point

Early on we rigged a large valley oak limb over a client's fence line on a single lowering point. The limb swung on release and cracked two fence boards. It cost us 2 boards and a morning, and it changed how All Tree Service rigs anything over a target in Santa Rosa.

The mistake was treating the arc of a released section as a straight line. A piece cut free pendulums toward the rigging point, and where that arc passes over a fence the load has to be redirected rather than merely slowed.
