Tree Care Services in Santa Rosa and Sonoma County
All Tree Service runs four lines of work across Santa Rosa, Windsor and Sebastopol: tree removal, pruning, emergency storm response and stump grinding. Each has its own page with the method, the standards it is performed to, and the price band it is quoted inside.
An arborist assessment sits in front of all four. Robert Vasquez walks the property, inspects each tree in scope, and writes a fixed-price scope naming the specification before any figure is agreed. The assessment is free and carries no obligation.
Which service does a particular problem need?
Match the defect to the work. A defect in the root plate or lower stem means removal. A defect in the crown usually means pruning. A tree already down means storm response. All Tree Service settles the question on site at the Santa Rosa or Windsor property rather than over the telephone.
| Service | Price band | Typical trigger |
|---|---|---|
| Tree Removal | $650 to $4,800 per tree | Root plate failure, decay column, dead or dying stem |
| Tree Trimming and Pruning | $375 to $2,200 per tree | Deadwood, clearance, crown too dense or one-sided |
| Emergency Storm Response | $850 to $6,500 per call-out | Tree down on a structure, drive or conductor |
| Stump Grinding | $180 to $900 per stump | Replanting, paving, or removing a pathogen food base |
Each page carries the full technical description and the questions customers ask most: Tree Removal, Tree Trimming and Pruning, Emergency Storm Response, Stump Grinding.
The assessment that comes first
Every job starts the same way, whichever service it turns into:
- Walk the drip line and inspect the root plate for lifting, cracking or fungal fruiting bodies.
- Sound the lower stem and note any hollow response, cavity or decay column.
- Read every scaffold union for included bark and codominant stems.
- Identify the targets beneath the crown and the occupancy of each.
- Record access: gate widths, slope, overhead conductors and the drop zone available.
- Write the method, the standard and the fixed figure while still on the property.
What standards is the work performed to?
Two. ANSI A300 governs how a tree is pruned, and ANSI Z133 governs how the crew stays safe doing it. All Tree Service writes the A300 part number onto every Santa Rosa pruning scope, so a cut can be checked against a published specification rather than against an opinion.

ANSI Z133 requires a defined drop zone before any climbing or felling operation begins, and it applies to every lowered section as well. Source: Tree Care Industry Association.
Standards matter here because tree work is bid on judgement. Without a named specification, two quotes for the same crown are not comparable, and a dispute afterwards has nothing to be settled against. A scope that says ANSI A300 Part 1 crown reduction is a scope with a definition behind it.
Licensing and the register
California tree service contractors hold the D-49 Tree Service classification, which covers pruning, removal and stump work. Source: California Contractors State License Board.
The licence number sits in the footer of every page on this site, next to a link to the Contractors State License Board register. Checking it takes about a minute and is worth doing for any contractor, including this one.
How does defensible space change what gets cut?
Defensible space moves the job from aesthetics to fuel. California requires 100 feet of defensible space around structures in State Responsibility Areas. On a Sonoma County property that decides crown spacing, ladder fuel removal and how far limbs are lifted away from grass and shrub layers.

Fuel reduction work reads differently from ornamental pruning on a scope, and pricing one as the other produces an unexpected bill. Lifting a canopy away from a shrub layer, opening horizontal spacing between crowns on a slope, and taking out standing dead material are three separate operations with three separate costs.
Zone 1 and Zone 2 in practice
- Zone 1, from the wall out to 30 feet: deadwood out, crowns lifted clear of the roof, 10 feet of clearance around a chimney.
- Zone 2, from 30 feet to 100 feet: horizontal crown spacing opened, ladder fuel cut, dense conifer stands thinned.
- Slopes increase the required spacing, because fire moves faster uphill.
- Standing dead trees come out of both zones regardless of species.
When does Sonoma County require a permit?
For protected species and protected sizes inside a city boundary, and for work on unincorporated parcels. All Tree Service checks the parcel before quoting and prepares the arborist report the application needs, so no protected tree in Santa Rosa or Sebastopol is touched before an approval arrives.

Applications fail on evidence rather than on merit. A defect nobody photographed, a diameter measured at the wrong height, or a species named loosely will send a file back for weeks. Measuring at 4.5 feet above grade and photographing from three angles avoids most rejections.
Service areas and their local rules
All Tree Service works across three jurisdictions, and the permit rule that applies is the one belonging to the parcel rather than to the tree. Santa Rosa protects listed species and any tree over a set trunk diameter inside the city boundary. Windsor runs its own tree ordinance through the town planning department. Sebastopol reviews heritage trees separately again, and an unincorporated parcel between any of them answers to Permit Sonoma instead.
Each city has its own ordinance and its own common species: Tree service in Santa Rosa, Tree service in Windsor, Tree service in Sebastopol.
What does every quote include?
A written scope with a fixed figure, the named method or ANSI A300 specification, the debris handling, and the condition the site is handed back in. All Tree Service invoices the figure on the scope, and additional work happens in Santa Rosa only when a customer asks for it in writing.
- The pruning specification or the removal method, named rather than described.
- The equipment: climbed and rigged, bucket lift, or crane with a written lift plan.
- What happens to the wood, the brush and the chips before the crew leaves.
- The finished grade where stump grinding is part of the same visit.
- The fixed price, and the conditions under which it could change.

How quickly work is scheduled
Emergency work moves within the hour, day or night. Routine assessments in Santa Rosa, Windsor and Sebastopol are usually booked inside 2 working days, and the scheduled work itself lands within 2 to 3 weeks depending on the season. Winter storm weeks are the exception.
Demand is seasonal. The dormant pruning window from November to February is the busiest stretch of the year, and a storm week can displace a fortnight of scheduled work. Booking pruning in late summer for a winter slot is the reliable way to get the date you want.
Who does the work?
Robert Vasquez and the All Tree Service crews. Robert founded the company in 1998, runs the assessments himself, and signs the arborist reports that go to the city with a permit application. Crews working in Santa Rosa carry general liability and workers compensation cover.
A tree company is its crew and its judgement, not its equipment. Anybody can hire a chipper. Knowing when a codominant union can be cabled rather than removed, and being willing to say so when removal would have paid better, is what the assessment is for.

What does the crew bring to a job?
Climbing kit, rigging gear, a brush chipper and a chip truck as standard, with a bucket lift or a crane added where the access demands it. All Tree Service sizes the equipment to the Santa Rosa site at assessment, so the crew that arrives can finish in 1 visit.
Under-equipping a job is the commonest reason a two-day quote becomes a four-day one. A crew that arrives without the lift it needed spends a morning climbing what it could have reached in an hour, and the customer pays for the difference either in money or in disruption.
- Climbing saddles, ropes, friction devices and rigging blocks on every job.
- A brush chipper and chip truck, so debris leaves with the crew rather than after it.
- A bucket lift where the crown is reachable from a hard standing.
- A crane with a written lift plan where the stem is too heavy or too decayed to rig.
- Stump grinding equipment where grinding is on the same scope.
Insurance and what to ask for
- A CSLB licence number in the D-49 classification, checked on the register rather than on a card.
- General liability cover, current on the day the work starts.
- Workers compensation cover for every person who will be on the property.
- A written scope naming the standard, before any deposit is discussed.
Questions customers ask before booking
How much does tree removal cost in Santa Rosa?
Most single-tree removals in Santa Rosa run between $650 and $4,800. The spread comes from height, lean, proximity to structures and whether a crane is needed. We quote a fixed price after an on-site assessment, and the figure covers rigging, haul-away and clean-down.
Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Santa Rosa?
Sometimes. Santa Rosa's tree ordinance protects certain species and sizes inside city limits, and Permit Sonoma governs unincorporated parcels. We check the parcel before quoting and prepare the arborist report a permit application needs, so no work begins on a protected tree without approval.
When is the best time to prune a mature oak?
Prune valley and coast live oaks in the dormant window, roughly November to February in Sonoma County. Dormant pruning limits sap loss and reduces the risk of attracting beetles that spread oak diseases. Storm-damaged limbs are the exception and come off whenever they are found.
What is crown thinning and does my tree need it?
Crown thinning removes a measured share of interior branches to let wind and light through the canopy without changing the tree's outline. ANSI A300 caps a single thinning at roughly 25 percent of live foliage. It suits dense, wind-exposed canopies rather than every tree.
A tree just came down on my house. What do I do first?
Get everyone clear, then call the utility if any conductor is involved, then call us on 707-843-2333. Our dispatch runs 24 hours. We make the site safe first, photograph the damage for your adjuster, and only then start cutting, so your claim keeps its evidence.
Does homeowners insurance cover a fallen tree?
Usually yes when the tree hits a covered structure, and often not when it falls in open yard. Policies differ, so we document the failure, the damage and the removal with dated photographs and a written scope, which is what an adjuster needs to settle quickly.
Why grind a stump instead of leaving it?
A left stump keeps feeding root pathogens such as Armillaria, sprouts suckers for years, and blocks replanting or paving. Grinding takes the stump 6 to 12 inches below grade, we chase surface roots, backfill, and hand back a level site ready for whatever comes next.
What is the difference between stump grinding and stump removal?
Grinding chips the stump below grade with a cutter wheel and leaves the deep root system in place. Removal excavates the whole root plate, which needs machinery access and leaves a large hole. Grinding is faster, cheaper and enough for almost every residential site.
What licences and insurance should a tree service in California hold?
Ask for a CSLB licence in the D-49 Tree Service classification, general liability cover and workers' compensation. Verify the licence number yourself on the CSLB register rather than taking a photograph of a card, and confirm the cover is current on the day work starts.
How quickly can you get to an emergency?
Our storm line is answered 24 hours a day on 707-843-2333. In Santa Rosa, Windsor and Sebastopol we aim to have a make-safe crew moving within the hour for anything on a structure, a driveway or a conductor, and we book non-urgent follow-up work separately.
What happens during a free estimate?
An arborist walks the property, inspects the root flare, stem and crown of each tree in scope, notes targets and access, and writes a fixed-price scope on the spot. You get the ANSI A300 pruning specification or the removal method in writing before you decide anything.
Do you clean up afterwards?
Yes. Every quote includes chipping the brush, hauling the wood and raking the work area down. On removals we grind the stump if that is in scope, backfill the void and rake the grade, so the site is handed back usable rather than merely cleared.
